ISA officially was born as the Instrument Society of America in April 1945. Founder Richard Rimbach of the Instruments Publishing Company and 18 local instrument societies formed this organization to address information about instruments on a national basis, as well as on standards. The next few decades witnessed the organization grow beyond instruments to take on a new name to ISA—The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society.

Currently, ISA has 38,000 members in this nonprofit, educational organization. It connects people and ideas to foster the advancement in theory, design and use of sensors, instruments, and systems for automation + control in various applications. ISA is recognized for hosting the largest conferences and exhibitions for automation + control in the Western Hemisphere.
