UL 864 and Industrial Ethernet "Components"
The UL 864 standard pertains to Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems. When customers need to install such devices in their plants, confusion sometimes arises about how prospective equipment qualifies under UL 864.
UL 864 requirements cover discrete electrical control units and accessories installed in accordance with various National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards including NFPA 12, 12A, 13, 15, 16, 17, 17A, 70, 72, 92A, 92B and 2001.
Industrial Ethernet products covered by UL 864 are system components -- they are incomplete in some aspect of construction or limited in some performance criteria. Consequently, a component must be used in combination with other devices to complete a commercial fire alarm system that provides monitoring, control, and indicating functionality. Components are not stand-alone devices for direct separate installation in the field. Also, UL 864 covers electrical units for use in indoor locations.
